Music Monday: Favorite Male Vocalists

I’ve been writing a lot about my favorite women of metal, my favorite female vocalists, etc. I can’t help it, I like female singers better, and there’s nothing cooler than that 16 year old girl who can play circles around most full-grown male guitarists. But I think it’s time to recognize some of my favorite male vocalists. Fair warning, this list is probably going to include some death metal, but I’ll try to keep it to a minimum. As always, this isn’t an all encompassing list of singers that I like and it’s in no particular order. It’s basically just a few singers I like in the order I thought of them.

Mats Leven – Therion
Mats Leven is somewhat of a freelance singer. He features on a lot of different band’s albums. The only project of his that I’m really familiar with is when he sang with Therion. He remains my favorite singer that Therion ever had. Here he is performing Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah on Therion’s “Celebrators of Becoming” DVD.

Hansi Kürsch – Blind Guardian
I imagine that if I got to experience a Blind Guardian concert, I would never be the same. Here’s Blind Guardian’s Nightfall.

Jose Gonzales
Finally a non-metal song on this list. I love this cover of Heartbeats by The Knife

RONNIE. JAMES. DIO.
Ronnie James Dio’s vocal chords were forged from the pecs of Adonis and wrapped in Thor’s chest hair. I’m not posting Holy Diver because I don’t want any comments about how Killswitch Engage did it better. They didn’t. No one does Dio’s own song better than Dio. Anyway, here’s Dio with Rainbow in the Dark.

Wife Bonus: Tommy Rogers – Between the Buried and Me
My wife loves metal vocalists who’s growls make the walls rumble. She’s been in love with Tommy Rogers for almost as long as I’ve known her. Here’s Between the Buried and Me playing Mordecai. She chose this song because it shows his wide range. If you can sit through the first half of the song with the screaming and growling, you will be treated to Tommy’s beautiful singing voice and even a little smooth jazz. Enjoy!
